Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume – Too whiny and too gloomy

valkyrie profile covenant coverThere’s this kid named Wylfred and his dad dies and a Valkryie takes his dad’s soul away and Wylfred is like “Nooo y u do dat? REVENGE!” and a dark goddess gives him power to get revenge on the Valkyrie by feeding souls to a magical feather and then a lot of other stuff happens… but I wouldn’t know any of it because I quit after chapter 1. Normally I wouldn’t even write a post about Covenant of the Plume after dropping it so quickly, but it happens to be one of my gaming resolutions for 2015 so a very brief explanation is in order. Bravely Default – I’m sorry, I can’t do this any more

bravely defaultFor those who haven’t played Bravely Default, the story goes something like this: the world is going crazy because four giant crystals have been covered in darkness. So the party goes around the world and cleans all the crystals. Somehow, instead of healing the world, this just throws them into another world where they have to repeat the whole crystal-cleaning process. They do that. They get thrown into another world again.

See, right around here a red flag should have gone up. Didn’t someone say “Insanity is doing the same thing over again but expecting a different result”? But I’m not here to debate the finer points of the story today. All I’m here to say is that after four iterations of fighting the same bosses over and over again I’ve hit my limit and will now quietly drop the game. Do please go on, this is most interesting

Basic walkthrough for Entaku no Seito a.k.a. Saviors of Sapphire Wings

Because Jennifer asked so nicely. As the Japanese proverb goes, if you flatter a pig enough it will climb up a tree. This won’t work for anyone else who tries it, btw. Dungeon-crawlers are very import-friendly things, but you should make sure you can follow a Japanese FAQ in a pinch if you get stuck before you start one. Aww, now I’ve broken my promise not to talk about Entaku no Seito ever again. But it’s such a fun game, I wanna play again…

Update from March 22, 2021: A remake of Entaku no Seito was recently released in English as “Saviors of Sapphire Wings.” However this FAQ is based on the PSP version from 2012. Thus it may not be accurate at all for the newer game, so Follow this FAQ at your own risk!

Tsurugi no Machi no Ihoujin, last days are dangerous (spoilers)

Finished one playthrough! I went with the Light ending. At the end Marilith begs Mako-chan not to leave because she would rather make babies with him than chomp on the toxic magical corpse she keeps chained up in her palace basement (true story). How could Mako refuse such a charming offer? He can’t, ‘cos she holds on to his arm until the gate closes up and he misses his chance to return to the real world. And so he stays behind and they go on to have lots of super-powered babies who protect the world for many centuries to come. And they all lived happily ever after, the end. Yuugen Gaisha Brave Company review – Don’t judge a game by its cover

yuugen gaisha brave company coverThe good news is, the 3DS region-free hack works like a charm. Now you can play games from any region on any 3DS, which is excellent news for those of us eagerly awaiting the release of 7th Dragon III Code: VFD in October.

The other good news is that if you like nice-looking covers, there’s a 3DS game called Yuugen Gaisha Brave Company that has a pretty good one. It looks mysterious and intriguing and action-packed all at the same time. Brave Company also has an interesting premise, especially for fans of simulation/management games.

You play the head of a guild of adventurers whose job it is to handle the various quests that come in by hiring, equipping and dispatching adventurers, managing guild finances and developing the local sub-region all at the same time. Sounds like fun, right? Hahaha. You’re a gamer, you should be used to disappointment by now. Do please go on, this is most interesting
